RIP - iMac G5 (2004-2010)

Dearest friends, we gather here to mourn the loss of Collin's beloved iMac G5, known as "Zeiram" on it's local network. It passed away at the beginning of the month, victim of a catastrophic video card failure. It was many things, the last of a dying breed of PowerPC based Macintoshes. It started life as media center, it had a USB TV tuner and when Collin wasn't using Photoshop or Final Cut, he used it to watch the Daily Show or DVDs in his room. It was the home of Collin's entire iTunes music library. The early days were good, but the iMac soon found it's place as Collin's workhorse production station. This computer has had a long fruitful life, editing and rendering computer graphics, trailers, shorts, and comedy sketches. It went above and beyond the call of duty, when Collin wasn't using it to play the original Call of Duty. It was even able to make the transition to high definition. Even when it was busy it was always available via remote login for a variety of tasks. It managed torrents and streamed videos to the Xbox in the living room. So let's take a moment to remember the iMac G5 and the contributions this computer has made to the YouTube canon. The trailers for Band, the short film competitions, the popular web series Anarchy for Breakfast and an entire years worth of UpTowne video sketches. You may be gone, iMac G5, but your data will continue to live on.

Zeiram is survived by a MacBook Pro and a first generation iPhone.

Summer Movies 2009 Part 1

I've been really busy moving. But now it's time to get back to doing what I do best: talking about film making. Here's what I've seen and what's coming up:

Star Trek (2009) - I saw this three or four times, twice at the Alamo, once in IMAX. It was satisfying every time. The gamble worked, the plot was daring and interesting in a way Star Trek hasn't been in years. Yet it all made sense in that science-fiction-y Star Trek kind of way.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - Pure movie poison. I haven't wanted my money back from a movie this badly since Batman and Robin.

As much as I enjoyed it, I watched Star Trek too many times. There are still several movies I need to see: Up! in 3D, Bruno, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, G.I. Joe (although after Transformers I may wait until that one comes out on video)

But enough of the popcorn stuff, I need to see some quality films too: Moon, The Girlfriend Experience and now I have to see: The Informant!

It's got an exclaimation point in the title. It's a can't miss.
